I am in negotiations to option a book from an Egyptian

Customer Question

I am in negotiations to option a book from an Egyptian author to turn it into a film. According to her representative, Egyptian law states that the Egyptian company must have full film rights to the book and not me as a foreigner. The partnership would have to be between me and the Egyptian production company but I would have no rights to the book. Is there any truth to this?

Thank you for your question.

I think they are mistaken,

says that authors economic rights can be assigned and transferred and sold.

If there is any doubt, you can specify in the contract that the contract is to be governed by the laws of your home State and not the laws of Egypt.

There are intellectual property attorneys in Egypt listed by location here. You can double check my answer with one of them to be sure.

I hope this information is helpful.
