Which level of measurement is required for the median

This answer was rated:

Which level of measurement is required for the median?

A. Interval
B. Ratio
C. Nominal
D. Ordinal
Thank you for your question.

The median, the mid-point of the range, requires a ratio scale.

For example, a nominal scale like a histogram (frequency) of people with red, brown, black, and blond hair just can't have a "median" or midpoint average value. Convert it to wavelengths of light on the electromagnetic spectrum, and then you would have a ration scale and could infer some color value, but that seems a bit silly to me.

Thank you.
