Under what circumstances does a client have the right to terminate

Resolved Question:

Under what circumstances does a client have the right to terminate a business relationship with an accountant? The contract signed is no longer valid and the accountant refuses to release paper work and records to client. Thank You, Maureen

Normally, unless a contract indicates differently, a person can terminate their relationship with an accountant, or any other business person, any time they want. Normally parties who are licensed to practice accounting (CPAs), just like attorneys, have to release client documents and follow state practice and ethics guidelines which are enforced by state boards, such as the Accountancy Board of Ohio. You can contact the Accountancy Board of Ohio to learn more about your customer rights and/or to file a complaint against this accountant here.
