My '06 Lucerne, 3.8L is randomly overheating no matter

Customer Question
My '06 Lucerne, 3.8L...

My '06 Lucerne, 3.8L is randomly overheating no matter outside temp.

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you checked the coolant? Have you checked for a leak in the cooling system?

Yes, and replaced the thermostat. It's high mileage and last year seemed to have a coolant leak so I added a "stop leak" type product.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Lucerne yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes, replaced thermostat, topped off coolant.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Overheats and cools very quickly.

Does the cooling fan come on when the engine gets hot?

Ask Your Own Buick Question
Buick Mechanic: Mike S., ASE Certified Technician replied 10 months ago

At 202 degrees the low speed fan should come on and at 220 degrees the high speed fans. So, it appears at 220 both fans should be coming on. do they?

Mike, sorry for the delay, while waiting for a response I flushed the radiator. The radiator cap had alot of "stop leak" crud on it along with the ring around the top of the radiator filler. I flushed the radiator for 15 minutes then refilled it with water and did a test drive. All is ok. I re-drained it and refilled it with 50/50 Prestone and AC is good, Heat is good and thermometer peaks mid-range. I think I am ok.
