Buick Regal GS: I was travelling at 35mph down a city street

Customer Question

I was travelling at 35mph down a city street in my 1999 Buick Regal. My foot was on the acelerator, feeding gas for a fairly steady speed (35 - 38mph). Suddenly the RPM gauge went from around 1500-1800 to zero and there was no momentum at all when I pressed the accelerator. The car had turned itself off. I coasted to the stop sign, put the car in neutral, hit the gas, got nothing. The car was off. So I put it in park, turned off the ignition. Turned the ignition back on and proceeded normally. The car has driven fine for the rest of the day but this one incident concerns me. I can't be going down the freeway and have this happen. What do you think the problem is? Has not ever happened before.

Which engine do you have in your Regal? 3.1 or 3.8 liter?
