, Cooling fans running constantly even though it is

Customer Question

Customer: ***** *****,
JA: Thanks. Can you give me any more details about your issue?
Customer: Cooling fans running constantly even though it is below zero. Just replaced the temperature sensor and tried swapping around the relays with the horn relay to make sure they worked. Fans come on as soon as I start the engine. Recently had the radiator coolant all replaced. Not sure what woul be my next step.
JA: OK got it. Last thing — Buick Mechanics generally expect a deposit of about $18 to help with your type of question (you only pay if satisfied). Now I'm going to take you to a page to place a secure deposit with JustAnswer. Don't worry, this chat is saved. After that, we will finish helping you.

do both fans run full speed ?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
They seem to be.
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

with the key OFF they shut off ?

if so are you sure there are no codes set in the computer ?

any access to a scan tool to see live computer data ?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
They shut off with the key off. Thursday I went to sears where they told me about 4 codes. 1) low tire pressure 2) gas gauge 3) engine temp sensor and 4) thermostat. I replaced the temp sensor today and no change
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

ok do you know if the code for the tempo sensor reset ?

the coolant sensor was 2 wires you replaced one yellow and one black correct ?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I don't know any codes and there were two wires coming out of the plug that I plugged back into the new sensor
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

with the key ON with the fans running if you unplug the coolant sensor will the fans still run ?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I will have to try thatPlugged the relays back in (i would like to get some heat tomorrow because it will be at least -15 in the morning) started it up and the fans were on pulled the wire to the sensor and the fans stayed on.
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

ok can you see if the yellow wire terminal shows 5 volts at it at the connector you unplugged with the key ON

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I will have to get a voltmeter tomorrow
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

ok check to see if it reads 5 volts with the key ON

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Do I restart this conversation tomorrow?
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

yes just reply right back through this post

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
thanks
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

anytime

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
With the key turned on and testing the disconnect temperature sensor plug I only got 2.16 volts
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

that wire should show 5 volts at it with the key ON either that wires i bad or where the wire is crimped inside the connector to the terminal is bad

its very rare for a bad computer to cause this problem

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is certainly very twisted just before it goes into the plug
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
replacing this wire with a spliced on new plug?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I presume that will be the next step??
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Would it make sense to test the voltage "upstream" from the plug?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Voltage is 2.16 on the wire side of the plug. Where does the other end terminate?
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

the other end goes right to the computer

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I hope to get a new wire tomorrow to see if that solves the problem.
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

ok let me know

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Before I go through all the trouble of replacing this wire, I think I should check the voltage coming from the terminal on the computer. If it also reads 2.15 wouldn't that indicate something wrong with the computer?? and where is the computer on this car anyway? Inside the air filter housing??Thanks
Expert:  Gary replied 1 year ago.

that is correct

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Gary I have reached the limits of what I am able to do on this car. I looked at the computer and realized that I could cause more problems that I could ever solve. What should I do now as far Justanswer goes?
