1998 Buick Regal: Starter motor does not crank.

Customer Question

I have a 1998 Buick Regal. Will not start. Starter motor does not crank. I got starter to work by connecting 12V direct to solenoid on starter. Starter is good. When starter spinning, and helper holding key in start position, engine will not fire. It appears that ther is no voltage to solenoid or ignition system. Ideas?

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer. My name is David and I will do my best to help you with your Buick problem.

The security system disables the starter and the fuel system. If you bypass the wiring to engage the starter, the fuel system still will not work. The common problem is a break in the wires coming off the ignition lock cylinder. This causes a loss of signal from the chip in the key to the antitheft module. The ignition lock cylinder can be replaced or the wiring can be bypassed with a resistor to fix the problem. See diagrams below.
