From what you have described,it looks like as you may have suspected the battery is not strong enogh, or else you might have a loose or corroded or defective hi tenion battery cable. So to start with i woul try another battery and see how it goes. If the problem persists, then try cleaning the terminals and if still not good then try swapping the wires as one of them may be defective.
