Your question was - Once started it immediately engages forward gear?
Answer - I would be happy to help you with that. The most likely issue is either the shift cable snapped or some part of the shift linkage physically broke, and the outboard is simply stick in forward gear because you can't pull it into reverse due to the broken shift cable/linkages.
