No, it is most certainly not a scam. We are working with several customers at a time when the volume is up like it is now. Your engine uses a switch box to fire the coil which is fed 12 volts as it operates so if you stator and/or rectifier are out of spec it can cause ignition problems also. The fact your stator wires were burnt indicates the stator is bad and likely has melted insulation, this may cause overcharging which could result in regulator or switch box failure.

The switch box should be sending 12 volts on and off to the + side of the coil on the green wire. You can check that with a test light or multimeter.

It is supposed to switch on and off as the engine rotates. The coil fires when the power is shut off to it. So the box turns power on, charges the coil, turns power off, the coil fires, turns power on, charges. Hundreds of times a minute. So if you see 12 volts not cranking you should see it drop when you do crank.

Well, next check to make sure the coil is putting out spark.

Okay, so you may not have damaged the switch box. Get that stator replaced and then see what happens.

The distributor takes spark from the coil and sends it ot the plugs, but there is also a sensor in there to fire the switch box. I said change the stator because you have no idea what kind of power it is creating. You could be making 25 volts AC with a failed stator or rectifier. And the switch box is sensitive to voltage issues.

Unfortunately that may be the case.
