Your question was - 1989 Evinrude XP 150, lean pop while idling. Compression on left side 68psi, 80 psi on right side. appears all cylinders are getting spark. lost plz help?
I would be happy to help you with that. Unfortunately your engine has major problems. These were not high compression engines, but the lower limit cutoff is 80 PSI. Anything below 80 PSI is a technical fail. You have 3 cylidners that are right at 80, and 3 that are well below 80. You can try running the engine and holding your hands over the carbs and see if you feel any pressure or spitting back at your hands, if you do, the reed valves are bad and that can certainly cause low compression. The other thing you can do is try running a can of Evinrude Engine Tuner through the engine, which is a decarbonizing agent. If the piston rings are sticky and that's the cause of the low compression, the engine tuner will break that oil up. If that doesn't bring the compression numbers up, then you would be looking at deciding if you want to open the engine up for rebuilding or just replacing it.
