Customer Question
My Sea Frost BD...

My Sea Frost BD with AEO does not seem to be getting to the desired temp 38 degrees from 65 degrees until 36 hours later. I do not use a water pump with this system. I boat in Upper Lake Michigan where ambient air temperatures range from lower 50s to upper 80s, rarely higher than 85. The box is approximately 17 cubic feet, with 2 holding plates. When I started the refrigeration this year, yesterday, it began cooling normally. When I returned to the boat, I saw that the low voltage cut-off led was lit. I recharged the batteries and then restarted the Sea Frost. The temperature did not drop 1 degree in the 8 hours I ran the system. It is several years old, and has always taken 36 hours to reach the desired temperature. I'm wondering if an adjustment should be made to make it cool quicker, or if the charge may be low. Any suggestions?

It still takes a long time to reach the programmed temperature. Plus, it doesn't seem to hold it consistently. When I last opened it 12 hrs ago, the temp was 41, now, with no openings, its 45. Why?
Marine Mechanic: Boat Doc, Boat Enthusiast replied 2 months ago

I would definitely check the charge. All the mechanicals are working because it is dropping temps, but the erratic operation could be due to low refrigerant levels and possibly overheating the compressor resulting in shut down (low level will cause compressor overheat) .

How do I check the charge?
Marine Mechanic: Boat Doc, Boat Enthusiast replied 2 months ago

It is done with a special set of gauges and a temp conversion chart. Normally it is more economical to call for service than purchase the equipment, and if it needs a charge, you cannot purchase the refrigerant because you have to have a license to do that.
