Hi Jason, Flemming from DK...
Hi Jason, Flemming from DK here.
So now I'm almost done with the wiring on the engine, that you very succesfully helped me with.
I'm looking at the switchboard and ignition key now.
Quick question, is it normal that the gauges, volt meters and such turn on by the key, and th switches for blower, viper, horn etc is always on, no matter key position.

HI Flemming, Good morning, Jason here. Yes it is normal. All boats will have at least 2, different, completely separate sets of electrical circuits in them. One set of electrical circuits will be anything that is directly related to the engine. For example, your gauges are supposed to turn on and off with key switch, as they are directly related to the engine. A 2nd set of circuits are what is called the "house" circuits. House circuits are everything that is not directly related to the engine. So your lights, horn, VHF radio all should be on their own separate circuits, completely separate from the engine. Larger boats will have 3 or 4 different sets of electrical circuits, adding AC generator and/or AC shore power circuits as well. But it is completely normal. As always, if you had a further question on the issue by all means feel free to ask. If not, please do not forget to select a rating for my help. Thanks again. -Jason

Excellent, just as I thought. another thing. The multi plug on the boat to go on to the engine side, it has a red and a orange wire, thicker than the other, and they are connected for some reason. See picture attached. they go to pin 4 and 6 in the plug. Is this correct that they should be wired together.

I don't see any pictures. Can you try sending them again.

Ask Your Own Boat Question

Okay I see it. The orange should be your alternator output. It's probably connected to the red because red does eventually lead back to the battery.

Ok, so this is correct as well then. Excellent. I am going over all the electric wiring to be sure that the previous owners didn't mess anything up. Thanks. I will rate.

You are very welcome. Thanks again. -Jason
