Hello, Jason here, whom am I speaking with? I read what you wrote. Which engine do you have specifically?

Hi Jason. I have the 496 8.1L Mag

Mercruiser 8.1 or Volvo 8.1? Do you have the model or serial number on the engine?

Not handy. Just need to know if the battery selector switch fried or if the inline battery fuse went ? I have no power making it now when battery switch turned on

Switches are just that, just a switch with no kind of fuse or breaker protection. Is this a Mercuiser engine, Volvo engine, or something else?

understand switch just a switch, but if designed for a 12V system and battery wires briefly whereas it may habe seen 24v....may have melted it (?)

Okay got it. I know what is wrong, give me a few minutes to type you up an answer.

Thanks. I know it was stupid mistake. Was getting dark and in my Hurry, hooked wires backward on 2nd battery. Stupid I know. But I need to get power back and wanted know where to start or likely damage done

What is blown here is the main engine fuse that is mounted to the engines starter motor. They are specifically designed to blow in case of accidental battery reversal. Before Mecury started installing this fuse, if batteries were hooked up backwards the alternators would smoke, and most of them would catch on fire as well. This fuse will blow every time the battery cables are reversed, it is designed to. What you need to do is replace this main 90 amp fuse on the starter to get your power back.

Click this link, this is a wiring diagram showing it; It is letter "h" in the picture

And click this link, this is what it looks like on the starter;

The part number on the fuse is 88-79023A91. Mercury dealers stock these by the dozen. They run around 28 bucks. If you are going to DIY this, just make sure you disconnect the battery first so that you do not short anything down by the starter. I do want to make sure you are happy with my service before you go. If you had a further question on the issue by all means feel free to ask. If not, Just in case you do not understand the way the website works (and some folks do not). You do have to put forth a positive rating in order for it to credit me for helping you. When ratings are not done, the website simply keeps your deposit and they will not credit me. The ratings box is located at the top of the screen. To rate, you must select the star you wish and also confirm it. Please let me know if you run into any problems or errors when trying to do it. If you do have a problem, or if you can not see the ratings box which is at the top of the screen. Please reply back "I rate Jason's service _______" and fill in the blank.

Please note that our question sessions never close out, so if you need to come back later down the road with follow up questions to the issue, you can do so at any time, even after putting through a rating.

Thanks in advance, and good luck
Jason

I actually did read similar info and pic on the web, but was not sure since the first inline battery was properly wired, if the circuit $ fuse would still go (?) I also wasnt sure if the brief period of potentially 24V would have killed the bett selector switch (?)
Either way, it sounds like that fuse you referenced is prob stopping whole circuit / power supply now. I appreciate the conversation and will handle the rating. And I will uodate you in a few days after work one evening when I am able to replace the fuse. Thanks again

The selector switches are designed to handle thousand of amps over and over, they won't burn up unless you literally wired a direct short through one on purpose. Whenever a battery is hooked up backwards, a charger is hooked up backwards, or the voltage is doubled by wiring 2 batteries in series, that main starter fuse will always blow.

Hi Jason. This is Rick Cook with the ongoing fuse issue on the 2008 Chapparral 256SSX.
We indeed changed the fuse by the starter and that restored power to trim, accessories like lights, etc.
Issue is I am not getting the chirp when turning the key prior to start, as no power to the gauges or the starter circuit. Where is another fuse or have we crossed a cable on the batteries or what???

HI Rick. Got your message. Can I get the serial number on the engine this time around so I can pull the appropriate manual.

Hi Jason. The Mercury Ser # is,
#1A059607
The family # on Tag is,
# 7M9XM 08.1 BASAnd I can send you some pictures if you give me a nu.ber to send too. (Battery & wire hoik up view, motor, ser# ***** etc.At this point, we changed fuse (took while because if work and had to order fuse) and as I prior stated, that returned some power, but not ignition chirp at switch, not gauges. No activity there. I did remove too side cowling to look by ECM for a fuse to reset, but didn't see any. Also looked behind battery selector switch for any burnt wires, but none. Also, the switch is NOT letting power of any type through when turned on battery 1 (??)
It does let some power through as stated, but only on battery w
switch on # 2.
Also nothing when turned to "both, which is really odd. Again....maybe we have a missed fuse reset or wires not right? Both batteries are at nearly 13 volts, so should not be issues with them. Thanks again for assisting and helping me figure next steps. I am working today....so will reply only when able. Take care

On the top of the engine there will be a bracket. The bracket is #1 in the picture. On that bracket is a circuit breaker, #7. Check and see if the breaker is tripped or not. If it does not appear tripped, pull the breaker out and check for power on the back of it and let me know if you have power on both terminals, 1 terminal, or no terminals on the back of that breaker.

Jason - Did you get my last update from the prior weekend? We did confirm / correct issue with No power to ignition. My son failed to reattach ignition wire on the starter when he changed that 90 amp fuse. Anyway, he corrected and the ignition power beeps when key turned on, as well as gauges respond too. Still...battery switch when #1 selected provides nothing of power anywhere. On both or #2, power works. So, now we are back to original issue, which is starter does not engage. Just a click when key turned. We tried to jump wire across starter solenoid. It has power and sparks when jumped. But no starter movement. Thoughts??? Need know if likely starter? Also thoughts on battery switch ?? Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving.
