Customer Question
I've got a pair...

I've got a pair of Perkins 6.354s dating from 1984 and showing 1100 hours. Both engines have had all hoses replaced, been washed out with coolant system cleaner, have new impellers, show water flow from the exhaust. So far as I know, the oil and trans coolers have never been opened or inspected. The engine RPMs max out at about 2300. We run the boat at 1800 or 2000 rpm. The port engine is content to be run at up to the 2300 rpm w/o heating beyond about 210 deg f. The starboard engine will intermittently/randomly overheat even when run at 1800 rpm. When it does, I, variously, back off to idle and neutral, or neutral with higher rpm. The engine cools down and I drive back to the slip with it turning 1400 or less. My son climbed all over both engines using a laser thermometer and found identical temps from identical places when neither engine was over the 210. When the starboard engine shot up, he found no particular hot spot. Now what?

Mechanic's Assistant: Sometimes boat issues seem like they'll be really complicated, but end up being easy to fix. The Marine Mechanic I'm going to connect you with knows all the tricks and shortcuts. Is there anything else the Marine Mechanic should be aware of?

I'm a woodchuck and long-time sailboater. I'm arthritic and oversized.

Hello my name is ***** ***** am I speaking with? I read what you wrote. You could simply have a bad gauge, bad sending unit for the gauge, or a wiring issue between the engine and gauges. Have you tried swapping around the temp sending units or gauges yet to see if the problem follows the gauge/sending unit?
