Hi. I A have a Prostar 197 (2007) and this morning, while pulling a barefooter, got one of my mooring lines caught in the prop (don't ask). In any event, my son and I got it unraveled. The engine however will not rev past 1,000 RPM's. I can put in gear and it will engage but not rev past 1,000 RPM. What must be done. Is a "failsafe mechanism" deployed in the wake of the rope being snagged or is it something else more problematic?

Mechanic's Assistant: Can you guesstimate how old the engine is? And has it done anything like this in the past?

Original engine. 10 years.

And yes, but not In the context of a rope being snagged.

Not really although the boat's electrical system has never run optimally. The dashboard gauges have been down for years. I pull skiers by "feel" as I have been a skier for 40 years. Another, "don't ask."

H​I, will the engine rev past 1000 out of gear? Do you have access to the prop so you can tell me how easily it turns in neutral (engine off)? Have you tried accelerating in reverse?

The engine will NOT rev higher than 1,000 RPM's out of gear. I have not tried accelerating in reverse. Reverse certainly engages though. I have not tried spinning the prop with the engine off although suspect it will be fine. Again, I have had the exact problem in the last and it was an "electronics" issue. Per my recollection, there was some sort of Bluetooth miscommunication between throttle and the main control board. Concomitantly, one of the plugs wasn't firing. After they replaced BOTH, the issue was resolved. It did not occur hovwever in the wake of a line being snared in the prop (it was spontaneous).

O​kay, let's see if we can trick it. Disconnect the battery completely (both if you have 2) and touch the positive and negative leads together for a few minutes. Then reconnect everything and see if it came out of limp.
