Customer Question
Hi, Pearl. My...

Hi, Pearl. My 2017 Bayliner 160 has a four stroke 60 hp outboard Mercury on it. On Saturday afternoon I noticed the engine sounded louder than normal. I also noticed that at full throttle the boat would only get to about 27 mph (it usually tops around 33). I'm really worried about my Merc and was wondering if you can alleviate some of my fears or offer some explanation!

Mechanic's Assistant: Sometimes boat issues seem like they'll be really complicated, but end up being easy to fix. The Marine Mechanic I'm going to connect you with knows all the tricks and shortcuts. Is there anything else the Marine Mechanic should be aware of?

I don't think so. Thank you, Pearl.

Jason, thank you for responding. My new Mercury outboard (four stroke, 60hp) equipped Bayliner 160 has suddenly begun to sound louder to me. It has also dropped from its top speed of about 33 mph to around 26 mph. I'm very concerned. Only has about seventy hours of run time on it. I take very good care of it and broke the engine in slowly. Please tell me if you've ever heard of this or offer suggestions as to what course of action I should take. It doesn't smell and is not making any knocking or pinging noises, but sounds louder and not as smooth. What do you think?

This would be a warranty issue between you and Mercury. Have you spoken with your dealer yet? Can you take a video of the outboard running so I can hear this noise, and then upload that video to youtube?

Was just hoping that you could maybe list a few possibilities of what it could be.
Marine Mechanic: Jason, Marine Mechanic replied 11 months ago

I would have no idea without seeing/hearing it first hand or at least over a video.
