Customer: I have a 1992 15hp merc two stroke. The motor has been in storage for several years. I rebuilt the carb, changed the plugs, new fuel. The motor starts and idles fine. It has a misfire. RPMs won't come up under a load. When the motor misfires it almost feels like a quick boost in power, it puffs smoke out of the exhaust. One of the plugs is clean the other is black.

Hello. My name is Tan.

The clean plug is not firing or not getting fuel. Do you have a spark gap tester to check spark or a timing light?

Customer
I can get a timing light. When I put the new plugs in I gapped them properly. I did pull each plug wire while the motor was running. The motor ran very rough with each plug disconnected. Telling me that it is running on both cylinders

Yes but is it consistently running on both. That won't tell you if you have a misfire. Is the spark constant to both plugs. You can't tell that unless you use a timing light.

Customer
If I use a timing light how do I power it? The motor doesn't have a battery.
Customer
Assume that it is not firing consistently. Where would the problem be?

I use a inductive timing light it doesn't require a battery.

Bad coil, bad switch box. What you do when you find the cylinder that is misfiring is swap that coil with the other cylinder does misfire move? If the misfire moves then that coil is bad. If misfire stays the switch box is bad.

Customer
Ok thanks. Which part is the switch box?

The part both coils connect to. Just follow the wire coming from the coils.

Post your engine serial number and I can get part numbers for you.

Customer
I had the flywheel off. There was a small box located there. There was also the part that advanced the timing with the throttle. On the side of the motor is a bigger box with a bunch of wires going to the coils

In this diagram # 6 is the switch box. # 9 is the ignition coil. 1 is the stator and 4 is the trigger.http://www.marineengine.com/parts/mercury_marine_parts/sn/0D092246/1015201MD/496_70

Customer
Thank you. You have given me a new direction to travel. I hope it leads me to a good running motor.

Your welcome.......Post back if you need further assistance.

Please don't forget to positively rate my help as that is the only way I get credit for helping you.

Thank you.........Tan
