I HAVE A 1988 85HP FORCE OB MOTOR IDOLS FINE AND ACCELERATES

Customer Question

I HAVE A 1988 85HP FORCE OB MOTOR IDOLS FINE AND ACCELERATES TO FULL RPM ON MUFFS CARBS WERE JUST REBUILT. THE ISSUE IS WHEN UNDERWAY THE BOAT MAXES OUT AT 1500 RPMS (10MPH) NO SPUTTERING OR BACKFIRING JUST DOES NOT ACCELERATE BEYOND THAT. I CHECKED THE TROTTLE LINKAGE AND MANUALLY TROTTLED MOTOR WITH SAME RESULT.

Hi Mark, my name is Jason.

Have you ever seen this engine make full power under a load personally? If yes, how long ago was that?

How old is the fuel?

Steps 1 and 2 are to check engine compression, and check spark output with a timing light. Are you able to do those tests? Have those tests been done?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Tests have not been done motor ran under full power last November, before carbs were rebuilt would bog down under power but would occasionally surge up to full rpm under load

The engine compression and spark output need to be tested first before looking at the fuel system. Are those tests something you can do on your own? Did you have any specific or general questions for me, or would you prefer if I explained how we troubleshoot these in the shop, covering all bases?
