VerifiedHello my name is ***** ***** am I speaking with? To answer your question directly no, you can not hook up 2 engines to 1 battery. What will happen is the charging systems on both engines will compete against each other to charge the battery, and one of the charging systems on the engines will fry. Does that make sense to you? Do you have any other questions on the issue? -Jason
Your Evinrude mechanic is incorrect. If you do not believe me go ahead and hook up both engines to 1 battery, run them both for 1 week, and come on back and let me know which voltage regulator is blown. Chances are it will be the Mercury because it has a weaker charging system than the Evinrude. But it's still a flip of the coin. You can take just about any engine, inboard or outboard, and hook 1 engine up to 1 battery, hook 1 engine up to two batteries, and even hook up 1 engine to 5 batteries if it's wired the correct way along with a charging relay or isolator. But you can not hook up 2 engines to one battery. The only time this is ever done is if one of the engines does not have a charging system on it. If an engine does not have a charging system on it then it can be done. But other than that, if it has a charging system, 2 engines on 1 battery is going to cause the charging systems to compete, and one f them will fail. At this point you can choose to believe who you want to believe. But here are the facts. If you follow my advice and use one battery per engine, you will never have a problem with the charging systems on either engine, and there is no chance of blowing a voltage regulator. If you follow the Evinrude mechanics advice and you blow a 300 dollar voltage regulator on one of the engines, will he replace that regulator at no charge to you? Parts and labor included? I think not. So I stand by my answer. I've been at this close to 20 years, I have a degree in Marine Technology, I am certified in many brands. (Including Mercury). On this website here I have close to 13 thousand satisfied customers, with a 99.2% positive feedback ratio. Think about how hard it is to interact with 13 thousand people and satisfy 99% of them...... If anything I'm saving you hundreds of dollars with my advice.
