Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
Its a e150gleis yes the compression is good and the spark plugs are all fireing
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Ok How are you checking the spark?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
With a timing light and pulling I'm out and holding to a bolt iv done put a new stater and power pack on it
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Have you done a cylinder drop test with engine in water running? This is where you start the engine and pull each spoark plug wire off each spark plug. Does the engine drop rpms on each cylinder?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
No I haven't what will this till me
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

This will tell us if the engine is hitting on all cylinders.

Have you checked the gear lube in the gearcase?

What is the engine idling at in the water?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
My rpm gage does not work but there all fireing when running
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
Well iv not tried it in the water but it does when iv got the water hose hooked to it
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

This test has to be done under a load. If you are dropping cylinders the engine will stall when you have a load. On the trailer there is no load and the engine will not stall. On the trailer you could be running on 3 cylinders and it won't stall but in the water it will.

What kind of rpms is the engine idling at in the water. If the engine is idling to slow it will stall in the water but not on the trailer. All of this depends on load in the water. On a trailer you can't do accurate testing.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK if I'm not fireing on all cylinders in the waster. What could be my problem
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Bad optical sensor or failing ignition coils, Idle to low timing off.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
The timing is at the tdc mark is up when the number one cylinder is all the way out iv checked that how can I check to c if the coils are bad.
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Your timing is off it must be at 5-7 degrees after TDC. The engine must be idling at 600-700 rpms in gear. If your idling at below 700 in neutral the engine is not going to stay running when shifted.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
Since why rpm gage does not work how would be a way to test my rpms
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

You have to have a working tachometer. Does your charging system work?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
It should. Work but how can I tell. Fur sure
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Do you have a volt meter to test your battery voltage with engine running?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
I got one of them can I hook something on the motor. To test my rpms
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

No you have to have a working tachometer. The tach works off the charging system.

If the charging system works then the tach should work. Now there is a way to check the tach signal but it requires a peak reading volt meter.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
What color wire in the. Harnis runs the TAC
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Gray wire tach signal, purple 12 volts ignition and black ground. You need ground ignition voltage and tach signal.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
How's the best way to idel it up the motor
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Do you know what the engine is idling at rpms wise now. You shouldn't have to change iodle adjustment if you haven't changed the linkage adjustments. We need to verify rpms before we just go adjusting the linkage. If the idle isn't adjusted correctly you can damage the lower unit.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
The are tlhree wires coming out of my shifter box could they. Be my TAC wires
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes you should have a gray, purple and black.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK I'll get a new TAC gages tomorrow and. Hook it up. Does it show. On the. TAC gage what wire. Goes wher
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes the sender wire is gray the ignition is purple and the ground is black. The tacjh will be labeled sed, ign, grd.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK I was wrong on the wires coming out there is just a 3 prong plug coming out of my. Box
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

That should still have the tach wires this is the connector for the gauges . Check the colors of the wires.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
Would the voltage regulature cause it do what its doin
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

It can as the rec/reg power the optical sensor.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OKiv got a new one of them iI can put on. And try that
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Ok

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
Would it make it not ideal right
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes this is why we need to verify all the cylinders are firing under a load. If the engine isn't running on all cylinders under a load it won't idle correctly

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
What u say the best way to check the fire under the load can I do it with a timeing light.
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes you can but that doesn't tell us the cylinder is firing. If there is an issue with fuel delivery to one or more cylinders you can have spark and the cylinder still not fire. The cylinder drop test is the best way. I explained that procedure earlier.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
Just pull one plug. Wire off. At time. And watch the rpms.
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Correct listen for the spark also. The sound will verify spark along with rpm reduction.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK if the timing is off how will I be able to till
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

The timing will not line up on 5-7 degree marks on the flywheel.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK I'll check that to.
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Ok keep me posted. I'm off to bed.

Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Your welcome....Thank you........Tan

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK I checked all. Fireing good under a load the ideal. Is under.600
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

If idling at 600 when you put it in gear the engine will die. The idling timing controls the idle speed. The timing must be at 5-7 degrees after top dead center. What is your idling timing now? The engine should idle at 650-700 rpms in gear. If you are idling at 600 it will drop rpms when you go into gear stalling the engine.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
I looked at the. Timing mark. And. Number one. Is out at. 5 degrees when its idling I can mash. The chock. In and it picks up some
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Do you have a working tach now? Does the engine still stall when going into gear?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
TAC is working. Now and yes when. It goes in gear. It still dies but trys to run when I'm pushing the chock in.
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

When you push in on the chock is this advancing the timing? If yes try adjusting the chock to get the timing so engine will shift without dieing.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
How do u a just the chock
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

This adjustment require a special tool. The tool sets idle and full throttle timing. Here is a link to the tool and instructions.

Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes if there was another way they wouldn't need a special tool.

Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK what would cause. It. To do that
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

To do what?

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
For the timing on the. Throttle
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes you need the tool to set the idling timing.

The engine not idling at the correct rpm tells me the engine is out of time.

Ask Your Own Boat Question
Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK guess I'll go by one.
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

The other option is to take your boat to a dealer and have them set the timing.

There just is no work around for this procedure.

This tool come with all the sync and link instructions also.

You can buy this one on ebay.

OK I got the tool ordered my dad thinks it some thing still. Not right with the carbs. Or the reeds are sticking but I'm like u I think its the. Timing
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Reeds won't cause the engine to stall and it wouldn't be running correctly if you had a carb or reed issue. The carbs have been rebuilt . Your engine is close to the model year that they added a idle jet adjustment. Do you have an adjustment like this pic?

The red arrow is the idle adjustment. http://i.imgur.com/5JZ4856.jpg?1

Customer reply replied 2 years ago
No mine does not have that on it
Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

I didn't think so. Then the se carbs have no adjustments. So the only thing it can be is timing or the lower unit tearing up. What does the gear lube in the lower unit look like?

The gear. Oil looks good. I changed. Itabout a week ago and it looked like all of I'm I ever changed

Marine Mechanic: Tan, MerCruiser Certified Technician replied 2 years ago

Yes you can use the instructions that come with the tool to set up the syncronization and linkage. All of this will have an affect on the idle. This tool is a must for timing.

The engine will run to cool. They need to be in. The Quickstart system needs to see the temp change.

Customer reply replied 2 years ago
OK could that cause the problem. I'm having
