Customer Question

I have a 1996 Merc 150 on a Skeeter 150 SL. Still a good boat!
Runs great. Now it makes a weird noise when I turn the igniton and the motor is not turning over. I'm a 65 yr. old sad lad! Reckon I could get lucky and it be the soloniod or get unlucky and have to replace the starter?

First thing, remove the engine cover. Watch the pinion gear on top of the starter and see if it engages the flywheel. If it just spins, with the key off turn the pinion gear by hand and see if it travels up the shaft. If not put a dab of grease on the starter shaft and move it up and down.

Check the voltage of the battery. What is your voltage? Is the battery in good shape, fully charged?

Check the battery cables are secure and clean with no corrosion, particularly the ground cable.

Post back what you find and we can go from there.

I think I need a new starter battery. I'll try to put one in tomorrow and clean cables, etc. I greased the starter shaft.
I'll keep you informed!
I'm glad you checked in

Thanks Jeff.
I followed your instructions and motor is turning over (again). It turned out to be a pretty simple problem, but I couldn't have fixed it without your help.
You derserve your 5 stars.
I'd recommend you to anyone having boat motor problems.
