Customer Question

I have a 2007 4 stroke 90 hp Mercury outboard. It beeps 3-4 time and eventually stalled out. I replaced the impeller and housing and the sending unit and thermostat. The engine is not overheating . I checked with an infrared thermometer and it was 137 degrees when it stalled.

Hello, my name is***** will assist you today.

The 4 beep alarm is for a sensor out of range, not overheat.

About what RPM are you running when the motor stalls?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
1000 rpm. Just above idle.

Have you done anything to the fuel system at all?

Look at the fuel line from the boat to the engine. Is it gray with red letters on it?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It is black.
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.

Good. When was the last time that you had replaced al the filters?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I have not done anything to the fuel system other than the 100 hour service. They put a new filter on the low pressure side.
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.

How long ago was that?

Are you near the boat now, and ready to do some testing?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The fuel filters were replaced 2 weeks ago. I am on the boat right now.
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.

Alright.

First look at the fuel line. There should not be a primer bulb in the line. If there is, remove it.

Second, remove the engine hood. Locate the FSM. It is where the fuel pumps are located. Trace the hose from the top center of the cover to where it attaches to the intake. Remove the hose from the intake and blow thru it. Can you move any air?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Blow which way? Toward the engine or the tank?
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.

This is a smaller hose. Remove it from the intake and blow back toward the FSM.

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
What is the fsm
Expert:  Charles replied 1 year ago.

Fuel supply module. The black box mounted to the front of the engine. The fuel hose from the low pressure filter goes directly to it.
