Customer Question

Merc 90 EFI 4-stroke, 2006, won't start. Turns over, but won't start. Fuel pump, battery are ok. We just took out for first time this season last week and it started fine. Now, week later, it won't. We sprayed lube into throttle handle yesterday to ease movement. That's only thing we've done since motor worked fine last week. Any suggestions?

To try and narrow down where the problem is we need to do some tests.

First thing we want to do is a spark test. Get a spark tester from your local auto parts store, an adjustable model is best. Put it on the top spark plug wire and have a helper crank the engine over. Do you have spark? If not check the stop switch first.

Next we want to check for fuel.

There is a schraeder valve on the fuel rail. Put a rag over it and depress it. Do you get fuel?

Have you checked the fuel filter for for water and trash? How old is the fuel?
