Kawasaki jet ski stx-15F runs ok but makes a loud whinning

Customer Question

Kawasaki jet ski stx-15F runs ok but makes a loud whinning sound that it had not previously had. This is a 2008 three seater. Seems no issues starting or givning us the power just the noisy whine.

Hi and thank you for your inquiry.Whining sounds are typically associated with a bearing that is in the process of failing or has failed. On a Jet Ski, the most common bearings to fail would be the bearings on the intermediate shaft and the jet pump bearings. If you have a mechanic's stethoscope, you can use that to determine which bearing(s) is the problem. You will have to run the ski to determine this. If you can hear it while running it on a flush kit that would be the easiest on you. Fire up the ski and run it on the flush kit like normal. With the seat removed, put the Stethoscope on the bulkhead as close to where the prop shaft passes through it as possible. If you do not hear the same whining greatly amplified, move towards the back and put the stethoscope on the hull above the jet pump. I supsect one of the 2 areas will prove to be the source of the problem. If not, probe low on the engine to check crank bearings, but that is a long shot. Here are a couple of diagrams so you can see what you are going to be listening for: you have any more questions, feel free to ask.ThanksRSRBOB
