Where actually does the shift shaft connect to engage the propeller.

Customer Question

Where actually does the shift shaft connect to engage the propeller. I bent my shift shaft and while awaiting the new part i have been trying to figure how the shift shaft connects to the propeller system to engage the forward and reverse. 40hp fourstroke mercury. When i drop the shaft it appears to be only spinning, not making any contact with any other parts.

Hello, my name is ***** ***** am I speaking with?
Mercury engines are cataloged by serial number, and not model, do you happen to have the model number handy?
Next, what happened. Did the shift shaft get removed from the lower unit?
