Hello, my name is***** you for allowing me to assist you today.
Was the engine still running when this happened?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes. I was moving at 5000 Rpm's. The lights on boat went out and engine revved but no prop engagement. Shut engine down. Restarted. No fwd or reverse and only smoke coming out of piss hole.
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Are you near the boat and can do a quick and quite test?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
No but ask me what you would do. I can tell u what was going on back at dock
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Or the boat is out back next development over. I could go to it
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
What I need for you to do is to shift the engine into gear with the motor off. Then remove the engine cover. Turn the prop shaft so that the shaft turns and the prop just does not ratchet. en you do, the flywheel should turn.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes. In gear with motor off it turns freely when in gear. Does not ratchet
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
You can feel that you are turning the gears? and not just the prop shaft?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I really was hoping what your thoughts are. 230am. Everyone asleep.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Why would a prop not spin and water not run through piss hole ?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I am out 650.00 tow. Thought 26.00 was not bad to get an answer. Is my lower unit screwed?
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Ok if that is the case, you broke the drive shaft. With no water coming out and no gear, that is the only thing that they both have in common. To know for sure, the gear case will need to come off.
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
That is drive shaft not prop shat
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Is this a big job
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
So I broke the prop shaft or drive shaft?
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
The lower unit needs to come off to be repaired, A drive shaft costs around $660, but can be found for less. You may also find a used lower unit for less than that. Do you carry ins on the boat?
The drive shaft. It turns the water pump and the pinon gear.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes. We have State Farm. 250.00 deductible
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Normally these only break from an underwater impact. Does the prop look like it has hit anything?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
No but a week ago I got a rope wrapped around my prop that restricted the prop when I tried to park. I had to get in water and cut it loose.
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
That may have been the cause. I would still call them and make them make the call on it.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
The insurance company?
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Yes. They would either tell you to take it to a shop for inspection, or come to the house and look at it.
you sucked up a rope, that is an accident. Ins is for that kind of stuff.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
We have limited coverage liability but I did see where it says boat engine and equipment with our serial number for 2500
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
That amount would cover this repair easily. I would still call them. It cant hurt.
