I removed the lower unit on my 1985 35 hp mercury outboard to replace the impeller and now that I have it all I put it in the water and when I crank it up the boat it in gear moving foward and if I lift the manual choke it's as if I'm using the throttle the boat goes faster

So it starts in forward? Do you have reverse and neutral or just forward?Are you referring to the warm up lever on the control?
