I have a 1996 120 hp Force by Mercury outboard on a pontoon,

Customer Question

I have a 1996 120 hp Force by Mercury outboard on a pontoon, driving around the lake pulling the grandchildren on a tube and the motor just stops instantly,I thought I blew the motor, at first it wouldn't turn over but after setting for a short time it fired back up then we started heading back in to the marina and it dies again, I got a tow back to dock and took it home. Since then I've started it several times with no problems, not sure what's going on, anybody have any ideas?

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
You still there?
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Sorry, I had to shut down for a bit, lost power. Ok so the plugs are ok. Do you have a compression tester?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
No I dont
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
You are going to need to test the compression of the engine to see how the cylinders are. How do you have the fuel mixed?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I think it's like 30to1 I don't have my manual in front of me but I always check it when I put fuel in so I don't mix it wrong,I will have to go get a compression tester.
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Sounds good. You can rent one at most chain auto parts stores.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I'm going to have to go and get one should I just message you when I do?
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Yes that is fine. I will be logged on all weekend.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I think I just found the problem, I checked the gear lube while I was waiting for you and it was pretty much empty would that make it stop suddenly and over heat?
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Most defiantly. how does the prop spin now?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
It spins but the bearing seems a little dry or rough, I can't remember how it was before, I filled it with lube and ran it for a bit than drained it , it seemed a little milky, don't know if it's got damage in there or what, any ideas.
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
Yes, Drain the unit, remove the prop, then I am going to have you open the unit up.
Expert:  Charles replied 2 years ago.
