Welcome, this question may need more than a single answer. Please post back with additional questions on this at any time.
More than likely there is something rubbing. Either under the flywheel, one of the belt pulleys or the driveshaft are likely areas.
Remove the large plastic cover from the top of the engine, a few 10mm bolts. Is there signs of anything loose? Rubber dust over the top of the powerhead?
Start and run the engine, preferably in the water so the exhaust is silenced a bit. Is the sound from the block? The cam pulleys, the midsection?
If it sounds like it is from the midsection or lower block then drop the lower unit and see if the driveshaft has wear marks.
If you have a stethoscope you can use it to pinpoint the source. Just be careful of the flywheel and don't touch the ignition parts! You can get a cheap one at a store like Harbor Freight.
Once we have it narrowed down we can find it and fix it.
Let me know what you find and we'll go from there.
