i have a 2003 200...

i have a 2003 200 hp that until Thursday has ran great. I trolled for about 45 min on Thursday, sat for about 2 hrs than trolled another 20 min then tried to get up on plane and nothing doing. the engine bogged down and died. it would not restart. I got it home and pulled the cover and watched the starter engage the starter ring and it would not budge. I tried to turn the starter ring myself and could not. I took the plugs out and tried again and the engine spun. I put the plugs back in and it fire right up. I revved it up a couple times and it sounded very strong. I took it to the lake and still could not get up on plane. I loaded it up and pulled a plug and it didn't look bad so I put it back in and cranked it up and revved it up and again it sounded very strong. I noticed when I took the injector cover off there was a pool of oil in the bottom of the cover and wonder if that was normal. I was able to putt around and compete in my little tournament until finally it would not start, it think I fouled all of the plugs. so I am wondering if it is a spun prop as one friend had recently experienced or it is a powerhead issue. where is the oil coming from?

I doubt a prop would be related to a no crank/no start issue.

Did the hot horn sound? Does the hot horn operate? Did you notice if the tell tail was operating , indicating cooling water was present? Sounds as if you lost an impeller and the engine overheated. This would cause the engine to bog and shut down and be hard to restart until it cooled off. Maybe a blocked water inlet from grass or plastic bag?

Make sure water is circulating and that the engine is normal temp. If not you need to check the impeller and or cooling system. Did you lose oil feature or forget to add oil? This could be an issue. What is the engine make .....Mercury? Does it have a low / no oil alarm?

Did you use different oil or change anything before the troubled trip?

Thanks for replying Greg, no alarms sounded, I was not implying the prop was the reason for the engine not starting. I believe that is because the plugs are fouled due to all of the oil in the injector cover. Should there be any oil in the injector cover and if not where would it be coming from. I was saying the reason for the boats inability to plane may be due to a spun prop as experienced by a friend recently. I was going to replace the plugs one at a time and each time I remove one crank the engine to see if any fluid pumped out, is that a good idea? My main question with the engine is the oil in the injector cover.

No worries,

A spun hub will usually create a high revving situation almost as if the prop had fallen off. A bogging situation would be more like a spool of monofil had been reeled into the prop!

Always be careful when turning the engine over with the plugs out. If there is fuel in the cyl and the ignition sparks ....KABOOM. Remove the emergency stop lanyard so it cannot spark and then it should be safe. This will also protect the ignition circuit.

I can only guess what injector cover we are talking about? Is this a Merc? Suzuki? Evinrude/Johnson? It would help...let me know and I'll give you the right answer!

Evinrude. I just cranked up to see if it would fire at all and it did. I put it gear and throttled it up real quick like you would a motorcycle and it had some power to it. so your theory of the impeller may have some merit in that the engine is too hot to power up and get on plane with a load on it. usually I have to idle several minutes to get out of the no wake zone so that would allow the engine time to overheat if the impeller is not working right. please call me at 281 989-6614 if it is easier to get quick resolution.
I did hear a alarm when I did that but did not leave it on to see which one

Hello,

Ok well , I'm afraid the website will not allow me to call , sorry it against the T.O.S.

However, it seems you have a two part oil system. A lift pump that gets the oil to the injection pump and the injection pump. Make sure that the hoses are connected visually. Make sure the engine is pumping water for the cooling. The EMM is very sensitive to heat as well and will act up if hot!

Remember , spark compression and fuel is needed to run , but you also need cooling on an outboard.

Last you have a spin on fuel filter. Make sure it is clean and free of water and is tight!
