We have a johnson 40...

We have a johnson 40 hp outboard motor we put in a new unflex controller side mount single lever 310 ch and new teleflex 330 cables and adapter kit. We cannot get the controller to operate correctly. The throttle operates before the transmission goes into gear and will not go into reverse at all. can you help

On the control box did you hook the cables to the correct points on the box. The instructions for the control should show the points for a Johnson/Evinrude.

Also remove the cables from the motor, shift into forward. Watch to see what cable moves first. This is the shift cable. The other will be the throttle. Make sure that the throttle cable will achieve wide open, meaning that it moves all the way out.

the throttle cable is moving first, then it shifts into forward. but when we go into reverse the transmission cable does not move

The cable that moves first is the shift. It should be about half way extended. The throttle cable should be retracted and extend when you throttle up. You are not getting reverse due to the cables being on the incorrect post on the engine.

This is the throttle linkage. It is the one that is on top.

The shift cable needs to be in the center of its extension to get the shift to work correctly.

Look at your connections on the control box. The one for the shift should be in the center of the travel.

ok its there but we still can't get it to move to reverse

When you shift with the cable unhooked from the engine, does it move at all. Or does the throttle cable still move.

Had to go check yes it moves forward and the throttle cable moves as well, but nothing in reverse

Alright lets start from scratch. Take the cables off the control box and find Neutral. There should be 3 detent for the box. One for reverse one for Neutral, and one for forward. Do not worry about where the handle is yet. Just find the center detent. This will be neutral. On the back of the control box find the lever that moves first when you go to shift, this is the shift lever. The other is the throttle. The motor uses a pull to shift forward and a push to throttle.

As you shift into Forward, the shift cable casing guide must retract and the throttle cable casing guide must extend.

OMC Service manual.

Your control box is made for several brands of motors. Make sure that you are on the attaching points for an OMC engine and mot a mercury or yamaha.

It is doing all the right stuff and we are on the right points for connecting believe me we have tried them all. And this on we are on is the only one that comes close to working. but it's only close, no shifting to reverse and very little throttle.

Does the cable even try to get reverse, you may need to rotate the prop to get the clutch to align with the gears.

Where are the adjustment barrels on the cables on the motor?

I rotated the prop still nothing the adjustment barrel's started out at 3/4 didn't work so we started moving them in now they are almost all the way in

Look at the throw of the control box for the shifting arm. See if it moves the same amount of travel for forward and reverse. You have a problem in the box.

I am in Ar. If I was just a little closer I could come and look at it. I an thinking that there is a problem in the box, that needs to be addressed before you can adjust it out.
