Has the boat and engine had salt water or fresh water use?
As far as I know fresh water only.
Is the engine the same year model as the boat?
Yes Engine and boat same year.
Fresh water is good as any boat of this age in salt water can have additional issues.
Have you been on a water test in the boat?
A water test to check starting, idle quality, and if the boat and engine achive full speed and rpm will tell a lot.
No water test yet but will ask for one. The seller told me he had the oil injection replaced. He also said they did a compression check and all cylinders were fine. Why would the oil injecting system need replace if it did not fail first ? Seems like it could have damaged a cylinder.
If this model Lowe has a wood transom be sure and check that it is solid and no sign of rot or cracking yet.

The boat is aluminum but may have a wood transom.
The seller said this part was $800.00 does that sound about right?

VRO fuel oil pump is common to replace without power head damage
Compression check if ok indicates more than likely all is well
Ok how do the know that replacement is needed?
Seller claims he has a receipt stating cylinder checks are all good
If no oil warning come on, if loss of fuel presssure, a running symptom, or if fuel backs up into lower cylinder through pulse hose
Good all cylinders should be within 15 psi of each other
OK Do these have a reputation for longevity or no? What should Compression be?
If the pump isoem and through a authorized dealer it has a 1 year warranty

No stated spec other than all with in 15 psi of each other. Usually over 100 psi on these.

How much do you think it is all worth? Of course I know you have not seen it? Boat is pretty clean
If all with in 15 psi compression of each other yes
Check book values NADA, etc. Pretty old may need to check oldest year in book and some less than that.
All based on condition and repairs or maintenance needed.
Is $4900.00 to much?

How is the down shaft length determined on these engines. How is it measured?
Have you looked at the newer E-tech Evinrudes?

They are 20 inch on these models (70 hp)

All new 4 strokes are . E-techs are direct injected 2 stroke
Very good and 6 year warranty now
What one is the best?
I like the Evinrude E-techs
2 stroke power less emissions and better fuel economy and less weight
2 stroke is better fuel economy than 4 stroke???
Yes the new E-tech is--very high tech
