Sir, My 8-hp mercury 4-stroke...

Sir, My 8-hp mercury 4-stroke ran like a top for 4-years, It is a 2008 model. I de-winterized it and put the muffs on and it started right up. Yesterday if failed me. At first I thought it was the fuel pump so a bought a new one for $90.00 bucks. Started but very hard and only would run at high idle, I tried fresh gan and some carb clearner no go. Can you help

Mercury made several 8 HP engines in the mid 2000's, can I have the serial number so I get the correct one?

Is it an 2006 or 2008?

Any luck Charles? Like I said I have new fuel, spark, fuel pump is new and the motor ran great after taking out of storage. Do I dare take the carb off and attempt to clean, I have been told the little tine opening can become plugged and that may be causing the problem is there anything I can soak it in to desolve what may be plugging it??

I never did see it come in. I was away mowing the grass for a bit. I will look it up now.

It dies sound like the pilot jet is the carb is plugged. It is not hard to repair. You can use a spray carb cleaner to clean the parts out and compressed air to blow everything out. It would be best if you had new o-rings for the bowl. Here is the diagram

will I damage anything by blowing air through the fuel line?

Charles, what number on the diagram is the pilot jet?

That will make a mess. What ever gas is in the carb bowl will be blown out of the vents. It will do nothing to fix the problem. The carb is easy to remove and clean. I can take you through the process, if you wish.

Well, I looked at it and yes, it does look easy to remove, but what little tiny screw do i need to remove to un-block the plug, also the primer bulb in the front of the engine has a small hose that is connect to the something on the bottom of the carb, How much dis assembly do I have to do to maybe get this thing unplugged? I am on vacation and the salmon and Bass out insane right now and I am land locked.

Part 28 is the hose 29 is the clamp.

80957002 is the float needle. If you need the one on the side of the carb let me know.

Charles, there is an exposed tightly wound spring about 1/4 inch, It appears to be a resistance to the choke or thorttle, is supposed to be exposed or did the screw fall out?

Where is the spring? the springs are 27, 37 and 6. Make sure that they are all in place.
