I just put a lower unit extension on my Mercury 9.9 hp 4 stroke motor. The s/n is 0T487480 model 9.9 4 st. I haven't run

Customer: I just put a lower unit extension on my Mercury 9.9 hp 4 stroke motor. The s/n is 0T487480 model 9.9 4 st. I haven't run the motor is a couple of year and I can't remeber how the cooling water is supose to exit the motor.I should have run the motor and looked at the cooling before I took it apart. It is pumping straight down out of 2 holes, one on each side of the lower unit. It seems as though there is a fine mist also coming out with the exaust. Can you tell by this description if the motor cooling correctly?

When you extended the mid section did you extend your water tube from your water pump housing?
You should have two holes one your gearcase that water runs through after your thermostat opens and it is normal to have a fine mist coming out of the exhaust.
If you are concerned that the motor may be getting too hot you can remove the cowl and touch the top of the block above the cylinder while the motor is running. You should be able to hold your hand on the block for approximately 5 seconds before it gets too hot for you to keep your hand there. If the water is not circulating through the block you will not be able to touch it. It is best to use a temp gun but if you do not have one this is a simple method to check.
