I have a kohler marine...
I have a kohler marine genset 5E. Changed impeller flushed all lines including heat exchanger. Now it runs 5 mins then shut off and the heat exchanger is somewhat cool but the closed system is very hot. also took out thermostat and ran the genset but still shuts off after 5 mins. What could the problem be??

Check where the water discharges in to the exhaust elbow. The fitting where the hose gets corroded and blocks the flow of water. Back flush the heat exchanger, especially if you have had an impeller come apart there will be pieces in the exchanger. Make sure the oil level is up to the full mark. There is an oil pressure switch that will shut the genset down also.

heat exchanger backflushed. plenty of water is coming out of exhaust. ??? Oil level is full.

Get an infra/red heat gun and check the actual temp of the genset. Check the fitting on the exhaust elbow. There is a temp switch on the exhaust elbow disconnect an run genset.

I have done all of the above except the temp switch on the exhaust elbow. Nothing is stopping the genset from actually running hot. The temp when I run it gets as high as 220 degrees. I will check the and disconnect the temp switch as see what happens. Can there be anything else that I am missing??

What else could be making it run hot. Is there a pump in the closed system that needs checking??

When the circulation pump goes bad the seals and bearings make noise and leak. Remove your spark plugs check the color. Are you loosing coolant? How hot has the genset gotten?

Genset temp has gotte as high as 220 degrees before shutting down. The circulating pump is not leaking or making any noise. Checked and changed plugs. Still overheating.

What color were the plugs? Check your connections on the suction side of the water pump for air leaks. Did this start before you changed the sea water pump impeller?

All problems started after changing impeller. Plugs were okay looking. Nothing jumped out at me.

Remove the pump and inspect the impeller possibly wrong impeller parts guys are not always right.

Removed impeller checked and appears to BMW right one. Got from distriibuter. I
