Have a Yamaha SX230....
Have a Yamaha SX230. One of the motors won't turn over. It cranks, but won't turn over. It's not in the fuel pump or filter. I've changed them both over. it's not the kill switch, the lanyard or the spark plugs.

Hi,
Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression.
Since you're certain you have fuel. You need to do a compression test to see if the engine has internal damage.
And verify that the spark plugs are sparking a nice blue color.
Do those tests and let me know what you find. We'll go from there.

We did a compression test. Because engine would not start, test was done cold with throttle at WOT w/ lanyard out so no spark. Results were as follows. 1-150 2-160 3-162 4-172. Tested one cylinder on Right engine at 165. These are lower than the manual states (157) and greater than 14 psi deviation, but engine was cold so maybe that's the difference. When I did the spark plug test I put a tester between the plug and cable and had spark in the test window. Don't know if the actual spark plug was blue as it was still in the cylinder.

 

Some things I swapped from L/R and vice versa with no effect on either engine (R started, L didn't):

--the cables and box cables originate from

--fuel pumps (haven't verified pressure to port engine, just that pump works)

--rectifier/regulator

 

Concerned it might be in the electrical box with the fuel pump relay or ECM but that is a whole lot of work to take off the complete wiring harnesses to see if any of the internal components are at fault.

 

Also, sprayed fuel injector safe carb cleaner in TBs and engine did not fire up with that either.

How did the spark plugs look when you pulled them out to do the compression test?

Ok so you have spark, you sprayed fluid in the throttle body, compression is good enough to run.
Only thing that's missing is timing.
What happened before this started happening?
It seems like some part of the puzzle just isn't there.

We were out in the boat and the left engine shut off. Just plain shut off. Started it back up after a few tries and it did it again. Then, it would crank but not turn over. We limped back to the dock on one engine (30 mins later) and we pulled it out, the engine started right up. I brought it home to flush the engines and both ran fine on the hose. The next day, we took it out again and the engine shut off when I started to pull my ten year old on a wakeboard. Wouldn't start up again. I know my way around and engine and this one has me stumped. I ordered a diagnostic sofware that should be here today. I have no idea what else to do.
