I have a 1993 351...
I have a 1993 351 W in my cabin cruiser bout , I have just installed a brand new Mallory breakerless points distributor , as well as a brand new Mercruiser coil , after about 30 minutes of idoling the distibutor and coil are so hot you can not even touch them , what would cause them to get this hot and how can I fix it ...

it is a non ballast coil , but acording to the Mallory tech since this is a breakerless points dist. I do not need a ballast ???? and my mechanic is just unsure about the older motors

I have noticed this before on electronic ignition conversions and it does not seem to be a problem. The coil and distributor may get hot but the extra heat conducts into the engine if they are properly mounted. Coils normally generate heat and the electronic distributors have high current switching transistors which also generate heat. I would not be concerned unless it keeps getting hotter and hotter. You will likely find that they get no hotter after a long run than they did at half an hour of idling. You do not need a ballast resistor.
