Hi,

I've got a diesel engine in my boat. It's badged as a Penta Volvo 2 litre 105 hp turbo, TAMD22P-B. Basically, it's a Prima Perkins with a heat exchanger and charge air cooler and drives the outdrive.

The problem is rough running with a lot of white smoke at around 2000 rpm. Idles ok and no smoke and smooth above 2500 rpm. I've had the injectors serviced and replaced all the heater plugs. There are no apparent fuel leaks, it starts with no heat. As there doesn't appear to be fuel leaking, I'm assuming no air is getting in. I believe there may be a noisy tappet, but it's hard to judge.

Could you advise as to what the possible causes might be for what seems to be "mis-firing" at a narrow range of rpm? I am thinking it might be valve clearance, hp pump timing or perhaps something to do with the turbo. I'm dreading the possibility of a broken ring, as this would be costly, involving craning the boat out and removing the engine. I have not had a compression test carried out... yet. Getting a marine engineer to come out is horribly expensive. I've managed to track down a Haynes manual for the Montego TD and the Austin/Rover diesel engine owner's manual, but they haven't arrived yet. I am contemplating checking/setting the tappets as my next option. The engine has done around 750 hours, not much... It appears to be a 1998/9 build. Volvo parts are really expensive, and Montegos, Maestros, Sherpas are no longer littering scrap yards, which is a shame. I could do with a runner for spares!

The TAMD22 had a few issues. Basicly it's a great engine, but the air cleaners tended to collapse and clog the air passage, so check your air filter/strainer befor more testing.

Next, they had a very narrow range of prop curve hp to turbo boost hp. In other words it's easy to have flat spot where the govoner is at max rack, but the enigne is struggeling to gain hp. This might be what your dealing with.

I am running a set of TMAD 22's and the flat spot is at 1900, then they take off and are fine again. In other words this may be nothing. Does this sound like what you are experiencing?

thanks for your reply. I can understand a flat spot as described by you, but would that account for the white smoke and erratic combustion? It is hard to describe what is happening. It sounds and feels like the engine is misfiring on one or more cylinders at around 2000 rpm. If I gradually open the throttle, it will start to stutter, the revs will drop slightly and there is a fair amount of white smoke in the exhaust. It stays like this unless I increase the throttle to 2500rpm or more or pull back. Max revs is around 4250 ish. The engine runs without vibration at lower or higher revs. The turbo seems to be making the right noise, i.e. it whines and whistles nicely and seems to be doing its job.

Not white smoke, but gray smoke. That is what they tend to do, but the stutter, that is not right. The TMAD 22 has a manual injection system so that is not the problem, it's not fuel feed or it would not proceed through the rpm range, it's not air or it would blow black smoke, it's not the head gasket or cracked block or it would keep blowing more white smoke, it's not a ring or it would get worse as you upped the rpm's, it's not the intercooler or you would not reach max rpm's, it's not a bad cylinder or you would not reach max rpm's,

Yes, I just re-read your question and I think it's time for the full diagnostic. You can do the all the tests yourself then come back here with the numbers and I'll decifire them for you.
