the alarm stops engine does not cool much did you see temp readings

Marine Mechanic: Shane Creekmore, Marine Mechanic replied 8 years ago
The thermostat opens on that one at 143 degrees so it is not running excessively hot. The alarm should sound close to 150. When you are running at higher rpm's the thermostats bypassed by a poppet valve to allow more water through.
The poppet is under the same cover as your thermostat. It sets in a small grommet. Over time these grommets tend to deform not letting the poppet open all of the way. This is also a place where trash can get hung in the spring also not letting the poppet open completely.
I am sending a link so you can see the parts I am talking about. Just cut and past in your browser Pay close attention to parts 8 9 26 27 28 and 30.

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/parts/365_90.cfm

Also make sure part #8 the carrier is not loose. It should be pinged in the block.

I spoke with my mechanic, who is a friend of mine, and he told me he checked the poppet and considered replacement but part seemed to be in such good conditiion he decided against it. However, to be sure we went to the boat and checked it again per your instrouctions. eveerything checked OK. retested boat, still same problem.

your answer, based on what I told you at t he time seemed like good information but has been determned not to be the correct answer for the question. can you provide more information that might help me with this problem thanks, XXXXX XXXXX

Two more questions. Did this start after you replaced your thermostat? What color is your temperature sender wire?

hello Shane, thank you for being so patient with my problem. i am almost to a point where i might just scrap this motor and buy a new one.

answer 1, problem existed before any work was done. however it seens to be getting worse, meaning the alarm is slowly being activated at lower rpms. by the way for your info this motor is on a 24 ft pontoon boat.

answer 2, i am not positive of color of wire. i think it is black. i will not be back at boat again until this weekend. i can confirm color when i reeturn home sunday night.

question? i live in central south carolina and my boats stay in a rented slip on lake murray yearround. where are you located? thanks. Ken w

Marine Mechanic: Shane Creekmore, Marine Mechanic replied 8 years ago
It's no problem Ken. I am in Richmond KY. The reason why I asked about the color of the wire is They have a couple of different sensors and alarms. You are not running excessively hot so a Mercury 120 degree thermostat might be just enough to keep you form overheating.

The part number for the 120 degree thermo is 14586.
