The yellow leads from the stator are used to charge the battery....This would explain the charging system failure....
The high speed stator windings are most likely damaged by the heat created by the burning stator leads...
A stator replacement will be necessary to repair the charging system and also we need to change the regulator and rectifier of the charging system to keep the same thing from happening to the new stator.
What happens is a failure of the regulator/rectifier will send 12vdc to the stator and this dc voltage will destroy the windings.....The other windings are placed next to the charge coil windings on the stator and this will in most cases damage them...
If will need a serial number to know what exact engine you have....
I would like us to double check the serial number, to be sure it is complete and does not contain any Letters in the first or second position. The number you gave is a 50 hp mercury outboard, but is a very old version. I would say 1960s through mid 1970s or about.
This unit does have a stator and rectifier but no regulator by design, the numbers are below. And Yes, I believe this is the issue and will get you going. Also note that this model I am looking at has a distributor that is belt driven. We do need to be sure of your model.
Please describe the "Top Box" to me some more and I will Identify it for you. I am thinking for now it is the starter relay.
