Whats your opinion of an Evinrude (1991) 200 XP realiabilty performance etc what should the compression be for a low hour motor as I have just bought it. Why do they it a Looper?

Welcome to JA.

These engines are called "loopers" because of the way in which the intake and exhaust ports are designed on the engines. Their placements and angles force the fresh fuel/air mix to enter the chamber in a flow pattern that creates a loop inside the combustion chamber as it flows into the cylinder up to the top of the cylinder and back down the other side of the combustion chamber as the charge fills the cylinder, it also has the effect of scraping up and pushing out any or as much as possible, left over exhaust gases, out their respective exhaust ports, as the engine fills its cylinders with the fresh charge for the next compression stroke. This is why they are called "loopers"

Now, just for the record, you will find that most all the engines on the market are what I would call solid- dependable engines compared to the way things use to be.

Yamaha was one of the first to take the #1 Customer Satisfaction awards away from OMC in the 80's. Their biggest, and is true for the majority of other new entries into our markets was the dealer base and parts / service centers base, so as when something unexpected would happen, there you sit, broken down and no dealers/parts to get ya back on the water over the weekends.

OMC products had a rep of being the "Dependable" engine all the while Merc had the rep of being the race engines or the faster motor, heck Mercs got there start in racing,, but it you wanted to win that puppy had to be tuned to a T in order to achieve this.

OMC has/HAD a cleaner easier to service design making it less expensive to service and keep up. Merc had no Heads just dome snapped cylinders, the pistons having to be installed from the inside of the engine, reeds placed on the cranks instead of mounting to the outside front of the block as OMC's reeds were.

Just little things in the designs that made one a little faster and the other more user friendly if you will.

As far as compression on your engine, look for it to be in the 90's would be a pretty good number for that engine.

Well, being this is the second time I have typed this, due nodding off at the keyboard and erasing everything. I think I will hush my mouth or my fingers in this case, and hope I have answered your question.

In closing, and this stands true for 100% of all outboards. You should ALWAYS use a good OEM oil, Don't really matter which manufacture you go with, Merc, OMC Yamaha, or whom ever, but use an outboard engine manufactures oil in your outboard, stay far far away from your k marts/ wall marts/ penzoil /mobile/ chevrons, and all the like, or you will pay a price in the long run for using these cheaper oils.

Mix to specs, and the more you use your rig, the more dependable it will seem, when your mixing gas and oil and letting these engines sit around months out of the year, you can almost plan on have problems when you do get to go to the water. Unless you take the time to run these engines almost monthly on a flush attachment.

Else that or go to the lake an run them, it makes a big difference. Keep in mind that all your outboards and most stern drives have factory specs requiring a water pump impeller change between every 1 year to 3 years MAX, and most of them are yearly, weather you use the rig or not. It is just a part of the game. ALways change your gear oil at the END of every season. Else a little fishing line wrapped around a prop shaft, can be a very expensive "gotcha".
