Customer: I have a 1996 mercury 40 hp 4 cyl. 2 stroke outboard. Im getting no fire on cyl. 3 and 4. I swapped coil from cyl. 1 and 2 with 3 and 4 and still no spark on 3 and 4. I swapped stator wires blue and blue and white and wires red and red and white still no fire on 3 and 4. I also swapped wires fron the trigger and still no fire on 3 and 4. I have the service manual that has the same ignition check list. I tested everything in order just wanted expert opinion on if it is probably a bad power pack or switch box.
Well it sounds like you got it right

better test the outputs of stator and trigger to confirm bad switch box

Sorry but your reply has not helped me beyond what I already know. Stator, coils and trigger check ok. Original problem was no fire on cyl. 3 and 4. Replaced switch box and now no fire on any cyl. Put old box back in and now back to fire on 1 and 2 but no fire on 3 and 4. I think i was sold a bad switch box.
are you using volts to test or ohms?

Ohms. I originally replaced the trigger and still had same problem. Swapped coils still same problem. Swapped lead ends from stator and still problem did not switch to other cyl. Old switch box no fire on cyl. 3 and 4. New switch box no fire on any cyl.

OHMS are not the right way to test

you really need a DVA and meter to test volts

Might want to pop the flywheel off

I have a dva. What should i check first? My problem is what setting to set the dva too.
auto range d/c volts

yoiu test the stator,trigger before the cdi box (switchbox)

statior should be over 100V
trigger over .7

then you test the outputs of CDI box to coil
the coil need to be plugged in (loaded)

that 100V should be over 150V
