I have a 2011 750iL...

I have a 2011 750iL with 41,000 miles. I recently had a transmission malfunction light come on periodically. It then goes off if I restart the car and everything is fine. The nearest dealer is 60 miles away. I have made an appointment, but is it drivable? Is this likely a computer issue or a mechanical issue? Thank you, Mark.

The engine sounds a little rough when the warning is present, but everything is fine once the warning goes away. The check engine light came on and did not go off immediately, but did so eventually. I haven't attempted to actually drive the car when the warning is on. I just turn off the engine, wait a minute, and restart.

if the warning does go off, it is definitely okay to drive.
even with the warning, you can drive, but I would suggest you do not try to drive the car normally day to day, only drive it directly in for service. You are the on hands on, so if the car starts to really struggle, make horrible noises, smoke, over heat, etc, you need to stop immediately
there are literally dozens of things that can cause this light - the only way to verify the underlying trigger is to have the fault logs read from the car using a diagnostic computer in a shop setting. Thus, I prefer not to guess at the cause. Common causes are low fluid, internal mechanical wear or a fluid leak at the electrical connector.
