what are the steps to replace a battery in a 2004 bmw 745li, including idrive resetting if necessary

-Remove the right flap trim cover in the trunk compartment.

 

-Remove the battery cover:

Release screw (2).
Remove car jack (3).
Fold back battery cover (1) in direction of arrow.

 

-Remove the battery negative cable:

Loosen nut (1).


Important!
Do not under any circumstances use force to pull off pole shoe.
Do not under any circumstances release socket-head cap screw of IBS.

Detach battery negative lead with IBS towards top, lay to one side and secure.

 

-Remove the spare tire in the trunk.

 

-Remove positive battery cable:

Unscrew nut (1).
Tightening torque 61 21 1AZ See: Specifications.

Important!
Do not under any circumstances pull/lever safety battery terminal off by force.

Detach safety battery terminal (2) towards top, lay to one side and secure.

Release screw (2) and remove bracket (1).
Detach vent hose from battery.
Pull out battery.

Installation Note:
Make sure battery is correctly seated in mounting.

Please take note:

The vehicle battery replacement needs to be registered to the vehicle using BMW diagnostic equipment. This needs to be done to essentially reset the engine computers charging strategy of the new battery. If this is not performed, premature battery failure of the new battery may result from the vehicle overcharging the battery.

So there is no way to avoid bringing the car to the dealer?

No, the dealer must register the battery replacement with the vehicle in order for the battery to not fail premature due to overcharging.
