So you have a Tokarev TT-33?
Customer:
Yes. In very nice condition other than there is hardly any finish left and someone has made scratches on the slide and frame. The pistol is part of a rig—navy/Aviator holster with Navy belt, buckle and lanyard all in excellent condition. My question is that I am considering having the finish professionally restored, but am afraid it will ruin the value of the pistol and rig.

But, i have seen a number of high-end restorations on scarce pistols like this go for high prices. What is you opinion?

These Russian pistols are most often really beat up; this one isn't, except for the finish.

Well, when we look at value, we use the Blue Book of Gun Values as the industry standard. Their values are based on percentages of original finish on the gun. For your gun, if it had 60% of the original finish, the Blue Book value would be $420. It sounds as if the percentage of finish left on your gun is quite a bit less than 60%...maybe 10-20%??? That would put the book value at maybe $100 to $200, and that tells me that having the gun refinished is not going to kill the value much at all and should help it. I don't see refinishing as a big risk here.

That's good news; I can tell you your values are way off right now; a Tok in excellent condition will cost over $2K right now from all that I have seen. Restoring this pistol would bring it up to an excellent rating, except for the lack of original finish.

Well, the book values are a mix of different regions, and dont account for retail pricing which can be 20-30% higher, depending on the current market conditions.
