One of the best perks of having a JustAnswer membership is the unlimited access to verified Experts at the top of their fields. With that in mind, we asked Dr. Ryan, a highly rated vet on JustAnswer, to share his best tips so you can keep your pets healthy and happy:

Vaccinations
Stay on top of it: It’s important to keep pets up to date on vaccines. Dogs, for example, need vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus, parainfluenza, and rabies once every 1-3 years. You don’t need to worry about over-vaccinating your pets - as vets are now able to do a blood test to see whether they need a vaccine.

Grooming
Grooming goes a long way: It’s important to keep a clean coat with regular brushing and bathing. For dogs, nails should always be kept trimmed, as they can cause health issues if they get caught, ripped, infected or if they grow into pads. But for cats, nails should only be trimmed if they get too long. And did you know that many vet offices partner with groomers who can help during your pet’s next visit?

Spaying and Neutering
Do good for your pet and your community: Neutering your pet can have significant health and behavioral benefits for both dogs and cats. Plus, it will prevent unwanted litters and the risk that they will end up at an adoption center waiting for a loving home.

Preventative Medications
Here’s one thing you'll definitely want to avoid: Depending on the area that you live in, monthly preventatives can be very important. Parasites like lungworm can make your pet very unwell so regular deworming, as well as regular flea treatment are essential. Remember, getting rid of them is a lot more difficult than preventing them!
