Is blood in the urine a fatal sign for cats?
Posted in: Pets
Q: My cat, Carla, is 18 years old and she has had a thyroid problem along with kidney problems. She has been on K/D food and taking Methimazole (0.5 ml) every 12 hours. I live 2 1/2 hours from the doctor and am unsure what to do after she has started passing blood in her urine? Is it time to put her to sleep?
A: Blood in the urine isn't automatically a life-threatening issue requiring the thought of euthanasia. Cats with kidney disease are prone to urinary infections, so that may be all that's going on in this situation.
Of course, it would be best for Carla to have at least an examination and a urinalysis performed. But if she is eating and drinking, and otherwise appears to be stable, emergency care today is probably not required.
