Hello, i've an 2-3 years...
Hello, i've an 2-3 years old male eclectus parrot, we adopted him 6 months ago. Nowadays he's got black feathers. i think due to the diet problem because we adores nuts and seeds, instead of eating his fruits&veggies he insists of eating nuts and sees. For 5 days i only give himfruit&veggie mix. He eats them. And also for 10 days we itches his beak and neck, rubs his face. This morning his urine was a little yellow colored. Black feathers, itchy beak and yellow urine are the cause of liver problem? Also, nowadays he's generally suddenly gets fluffy and shakes himself many times during a day. Also occasionally shakes his tail after shakes himself. These suddenly shakings and itchy beak&skin are normal nowadays for this diet problem?

Thank you for the photos. To answer you directly, yes, color changes in the feathers of an eclectus parrot as well as yellow urates in the droppings can indicate liver disease - in this case most likely due to nutritional imbalance. Nutritional issues alone, however, can also cause abnormally colored feathers in these birds. Because he's also pruritic (itchy), hypovitaminosis A (a lack of vitamin A in his diet) needs to be an important consideration. It would be prudent to add a liquid soluble vitamin supplement such as Oasis brand to his drinking water. Nutritional imbalances are a common cause of illness in our pet birds. Seeds should compose less than 20% of his diet. A diet of mainly seed and nuts has excessive fat, carbohydrates, and phosphorus; marginal protein; adequate vitamin E, and are deficient in amino acids, calcium, available phosphorus, sodium, manganese, zinc, iron, vitamins A, D3 (necessary for efficient absorption of calcium), K, and B12, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, choline, and available niacin. Ideally, a balanced pelleted diet such as can be found here: www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com or here: www.lafeber.com/pet-birds should be fed as well as hard boiled egg yolk, pancakes and cornbread, the tops of fresh greens, dairy products such as yogurt and cheese, fresh fruits such as apples, pears, melon, kiwi, and berries, vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, beets, asparagus, cabbage, sweet potato, and squash, and even tiny pieces of meat.

Finally, please note that green feathers turning black can indicate saprophytic fungal growth resulting in grossly visible opaque black discoloration. This fungal growth is usually due to the oils from human hands left on the feathers after petting or holding the bird. It can be removed by using a bird bath product you can find where bird supplies are sold or online.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Thanks for your detailed answer. Do you suggest electrolyte to also add his water?
Also with the proper healthy diet and vitamins, how long it takes to recover?

You're quite welcome. Electrolytes won't be harmful but improving the diet should suffice. You can see a remarkable change in behavior within a few weeks. The abnormal feathers, however, need to be molted before normal feathers can grow. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Hi, thanks for your follow up. He eats his fruit&veggie mix hungrily. I decreased the seed amount very much. Now he looks happy with his diet. I'm looking forward to seeing his green shiny feathers again :)
His feces is browned color nowadays, his urine is sometimes a little yellow and sometimes pure transparent color.
His activities and playings are normal.

Thank you for the good update. A pelleted diet will cause brown feces. Yellow urates indicate anorexia or early or resolving hepatic disease.
