Customer Question
I have a bantam...

I have a bantam rooster old English about 7 years old and he seems to have lost his balance and just rolls over all the time.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with the bird?

He can no longer walk but still eats and drinks if I hold his wings to support him he can take steps but on his own he falls over?

Veterinarian's Assistant: Have you looked to see if there is a wound on their foot?

No wound appears to be anywhere

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the bird's name?

Lenny

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Lenny?

Yes around the time this happened I changed the chicken feed still a complete poultry seed mix. over 2 weeks the chickens stopped laying and then I found one had passed away and the rooster could not walk.

Sorry I just realized you are not in Australia so calling me is probably not an option?Do you have any ideas on what causes a rooster of good health to do this or if it sounds like it may be reversible

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on Lenny, please?

Regretfully, his severe ataxia ("drunken sailor") can represent any number of disorders including brain trauma, infections of the central nervous system such as Marek's disease (unlikely at his age), avian leukosis virus, paramyxovirus, West Nile virus, the equine encephalomyelotides; neoplasia; metabolic disorders that affect the brain; and toxins (in the new feed?). To answer you directly, only a toxicity would be reversible.
